Depending on how Persona 5: The Phantom X is ultimately received, it could be the first step for a new kind of Persona spin-off. Persona 5: The Phantom X is already looking to be an unusual game for the series. Being a mobile game with a gacha mechanic already assures that much. Even so, there is reason to believe that it could end up being more than a one-off curiosity for the series. Persona 5: The Phantom X is approaching a spin-off in a way that no Persona game has to date, and it could start a trend.

So far, Persona 5's library of spin-offs has been impressive. It added to the list of Persona dancing spin-offs that started with Persona 4: Dancing All Night, and its party joined the second Persona Q game. From there, the games started to cover new ground. Persona 5 Strikers took on the beat-'em-up genre, and Persona 5 Tactica was a tactical RPG. Judging by this trajectory, Persona 5: The Phantom X taking another leap into gacha mechanics may not be such a surprise after all. At this point, Persona 5 has turned into a source of new spin-off concepts, and it remains to be seen which will persist.

Persona 5: The Phantom X Brings New Characters to Familiar Land
One detail of Persona 5: The Phantom X that sets it apart from past spin-offs is that it doesn't star the cast of the original game. Instead, it follows a new group of Phantom Thieves on their own adventure. Despite that, it takes place in the same area of Tokyo that Persona 5's main story did. Of course, the absence of Persona 5's original cast would be unusual no matter the circumstances. The thief theme and the setting are the main connections between Persona 5: The Phantom X and the original. No other Persona spin-off has made such a move so far.
Persona 5's Phantom Thieves do appear in The Phantom X, but as cognitive manifestations rather than full party members.

The Phantom X's Cast Breaks Spin-Off Traditions
Persona 5: The Phantom X's approach could become a recurring Persona spinoff feature in future games. Outside of Persona 4's school trip to Persona 3's Gekkoukan High, old locations don't usually get revisited without the original party present. That does make up some of the charm of Persona 5: The Phantom X, providing the chance to explore a familiar environment under completely new circumstances. Persona 3's Tatsumi Port Island and P ersona 4's Inaba could get the same treatment in their own similarly-designed spin-offs; it would be interesting to see how these towns and cities have changed since the events of the original games.
Persona Spin-Offs Can Keep Telling New Stories in Past Locations
The return to Tokyo also has the opportunity to present a unique advantage to P ersona 5: The Phantom X, as well as any other spin-offs like it. Some Persona 5 characters like Iwai and Takemi are confirmed to return in The Phantom X, and they present a unique opportunity. While they may not have the same roles that they did before, seeing past characters again provides opportunity to continue their stories, and potentially explore them from a new angle. This would be especially true in the case of major characters, so if more Persona spin-offs take The Phantom X's route, this possibility shouldn't be ignored.
Persona 5: The Phantom X has a chance to bring a new dynamic to Persona spin-offs. While Persona 6 has plenty of chances to innovate too, opening the doors to older territories once again is worth looking into. Tokyo, Tatsumi Port Island, and Inaba still have potential even beyond their original casts. By getting creative, the developers can expand on the worlds of these older installments through spin-offs. Persona 5: The Phantom X's true legacy may not be its mechanics, but its new look at an old setting.
