Why did the power suddenly turn off? ›

It can stem from inclement weather conditions, human error, equipment failure, and even animal interference. Scheduled maintenance can also cause a power outage, though this is usually communicated to households in advance by the utility company.

So, if power suddenly goes out to part of the home, but no breakers trip, it could be that one of the two hot wires has become loose (causing flickering) or disconnected (no power). This can happen at the transformer, in the meter base, or at the connection to the main breaker in the panel.

Locate your circuit breaker panel and open the metal door that covers the panel. To reset the breaker, put some pressure into moving the switch first into OFF, wait a few seconds, and then flip it back into ON. You'll feel it—and hear it—click back into place in the ON position.

Short-term power failures

Check your main fuses or circuit breakers to see if they have blown or tripped. Replacing a fuse or resetting a circuit breaker may restore your electricity.

If the outlet in your kitchen or bedroom is not working but the breaker is not tripped, this may be a sign the wiring was not installed correctly. This is especially a problem with older outlets. Loose wiring could lead to the outlet not working altogether.

Depending on the amount of water remaining in the pipes, you might be able to flush your toilet several times while the power is out. Eventually, however, your tank won't fill up anymore because the pumps are down. When this happens, you will need to flush your toilet manually by pouring in a bucket of water.

Power Outages: During and After
